Some general notes on RAW development (and Darktable in particular)
Developing a RAW file can be anything – from a very simple 20-second task to an hour-long, challenging tinkering session (if that’s what you want). Fortunately, many photos fall into the first category where only basic editing is required. However, some images are – almost – impossible to get perfect.
After mastering the basics of Darktable, many users embark on a years-long journey, steadily improving their eye, skills, and knowledge. This is a process largely, but not entirely, independent of the RAW converter used. And for some, that is a joy in itself.
Darktable shines in several areas that make it a wonderful tool for creative challenges:
- The Selection: The huge selection of modules (tools) to choose from when developing your photos allows you to use exactly the most suitable module for the task at hand.
- Multi-Instances: The simple ability to multiply modules (instances), separating each development step from the other. This makes it very easy to change only one aspect of the photo without affecting the others.
- Total Control: The enormously diverse ways in which every single module can be adjusted exactly to your own wishes goes far beyond what other software can achieve.
- Simplicity: The way every module – despite its many possibilities – is easy to use in its default settings, makes life easy for users.
- Efficiency: The ease with which this complexity can be utilized through presets and styles makes it possible to get most images almost perfect in a few seconds without problems.
- Mask Magic: You can not only create simple drawn or parametric masks (by color/brightness), but combine them almost limitlessly in the mask manager, add, subtract, or link them with raster masks. This way you control exactly the area you want to improve.
Jetze P: The possibilities are dizzying and stimulating at the same time!
